Gum Disease Impacts Your Heart Health

"We all think that cholesterol is important to heart disease. The health of your gums is a more important predictor of whether or not you will have a heart attack or not."

Understanding the Procedure for Periodontal Disease Treatment in Fort Walton Beach, FL

Dr. J. Brent Bartruff uses the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®) for periodontal disease treatment in Fort Walton Beach, FL. LANAP® is a highly effective treatment for moderate to advanced periodontal disease, eliminating the presence of diseased tissue and many of the undesirable symptoms that accompany this condition such as halitosis, gum recession, and tooth loss.

The treatment is revolutionary, completely changing the way dental professionals treat the disease and changing patients’ expectations. Treatment for periodontal disease no longer means painful surgery, long recovery times, or sharp instruments.

We have laid out the procedure so that you can have the best understanding of how LANAP® works, and how Dr. Bartruff will use the laser to treat your periodontal disease.

• Measuring the periodontal pockets. Dr. Bartruff will measure the depths of the periodontal pockets formed by the disease. The measurements tell Dr. Bartruff the amount of attachment loss that has occurred between the gum tissue and your tooth root.

• Laser removal of the bacteria. A pulsed laser light is then used to remove diseased tissue from the periodontal pockets. The laser light will also remove disease causing bacteria. The laser light used cannot be absorbed by water, healthy tissue, the tooth root, or the bone. This characteristic of the laser allows Dr. Bartruff to perform this surgery in a minimally invasive and more comfortable fashion.

• Removal of the calculus. Dr. Bartruff will then use tiny ultrasonic scalers to remove the calculus deposits under the gum line and on the root surfaces of your teeth. The laser denatures the calculus, allowing it to be removed more easily by the ultrasonic scalers.

• A clot is formed. The laser will be used a second time to stimulate the soft tissue, root, and bone at the bottom of the pocket. The stimulation encourages healing, and causes the blood in the pocket to become sticky enough to form a seal around the teeth.

• Tissue recompression. Dr. Bartruff will then recompress the tissue against the root surfaces of the teeth.

• Adjustment of the bite. Finally, Dr. Bartruff will adjust your bite. He does this to make sure that there is not a considerable amount of trauma to your mouth.

If you have been suffering from gum disease and the symptoms associated with it such as halitosis, bleeding gums, and gum recession, you may be a candidate for LANAP®. Call Dr. Bartruff today for periodontal disease treatment in Fort Walton Beach, FL.
